Painting in the Pilbara

I'm organising a ruff n' (not too) dirty painting trip to Yarrie Station in the upper Pilbara for August. 10 days that will change your (artistic ) life. Final dates and costs not fixed yet, but probably 10th to the 20th.
We have permission to camp at the old homestead. Fantastic country - granite hills with remnant boulders, spinnifex plains and the de Gray river. No instruction -first in best dressed. Let me know ASAP

Sensu pens!

Just received two Sensu pens from Think Geek in the US of A  www.thinkgeek.com
These are actually capacitive brushes for the iPad and are fantastic to use, very similar to watercolour brushes.
Some online doubts about how long they may last, but ok for now.

Going through the Folio

Quai de Pont de Cite       watercolour     25 x 30 cm

Reviewing work from my last trip to Paris for the exhibition. I don't think this sketch makes the cut, but it was fun to do on a sunny morning!

Gallery Bash

Invited to the opening of Lava Glass Gallery yesterday by Evelyn Henschke.
Really impressed with the range and qualiy from professional glass Artists in the South -West.
Highly recommended - stop in on the way Down South or on the return journey.

Went on to Yallingup Gallery's  Garden Gallery (134 Marrinup Drive ),opening - works by Nelly Crawford, Larry Mitchell and Douglas Kirsop.
Study of Nellie's still lifes, (stilled lives?) will tell you much about composition, observation, light, mood and drawing and painting competence - aspects often neglected or undervalued in contemporary art instruction. Look and learn.

Larry Mitchell continues to demonstrate mastery of large , representational landscape in new works, and his treatment of water and aerial perspective are consistently impressive.

Douglas Kirsop's large Kimberley and Pilbara pieces represent a real understanding of this difficult country.  Few Artists can come close to his interpretation of light in landscape but his recent forays into abstraction are an exciting and intriguing direction

Wish I was Here

Waldo in Deep Thought

My solo show coming up at ArtGeo Gallery in Busselton is called
"Wish I was Here" and really looks at the range of work I do and my essential distractability.
So -
a quick sketch of Waldo on the iPad to get going in the studio.
I'm supposed to be working on 4 large canvasses at the same time, and its not going entirely well. On, on.

I also have a 'Drawing Essentials' workshop at the studio on Monday suitable for all levels, and need to do a bit of prep for that.

10am to 12 - $100.00 Two places left and a cup of tea at half-time. Should be fun. Back to the paints

Cultural Desert

A quick version of Cultural Desert for the T-Shirt series using Paper 53 on my iPad.
Sadly lots more truly bad puns and double entendres to come!
Cultural Dessert? Peas in our Time? Red Eye Flight?
I'm offering a framed copy of the final artwork as a prize for successful suggestions!

I decided  the hare ( called Albrecht) needed retro glasses to go with his shirt. Opinions are divided. Is it a better image without the glasses? I might exhibit both on the 12th at ArtGeo.

Had a busy session at Dunsborough Art Soc. last night,
working on these small abstractions of the ITG series
Now in the studio exploring more ideas for prints. Pity. Theres quite a good surf at Yalls today!

Imposing the Grid

This is one of a series of paintings in a long-term project called 'Imposing the Grid'

Its about the land, and how we relate to it.

Part of this series will be an important element of my solo exhibition at Art Geo in Busselton in April.

I will also be giving a talk at the gallery about the exhibition and about the development of these works .

Relax like this...

Art Geo Exhibition, Busselton

Just had a visit at my studio from Sharon Williams, the Curator of Art Geo Gallery in Busselton, and Liz Clark, her offsider.
The purpose of the visit was to firm up the details of my solo exhibition in April.
Fortunately the work is going well, so with a bit of luck most of the pieces should be dry by the time I get them to the framers!

WRITER'S BLOCK

I was thinking about blocks to creativity in painting and writing, and tried to visualize what they might look like.
Here’s a first pass – a block covered with the opening lines of  great literary works – probably not much use if you can’t get started on your own opus.
Remembered the apostrophe too!

Chick lit?

While this was fun to do the subject is not that funny.

I wanted to make a point in a non preachy but powerful way

Let me know what you think

Unblocking

Wine glass    3b pencil on 185 gsm hp paper  27cm x 34 cm

Had a flat spell recently so decided to go back to basics.
One of my ways to get past creative blocks is to set up and quickly sketch a few objects like this.
Now! Back to the paints

Vasse Art Award entry

Sumiko       oil on canvas   92cm x 62cm

Just sent off my entry for the Vasse Art Prize. Not at the last minute as usual!
I’m still experimenting with media and colour.
This study was done with a credit card and palette knife in oils – great fun.

The watercolour below was done on a very cold and blustery morning – fortunately the coffee van was nearby!
Yallingup Spring Morning water colour 22cm x 32cm
